Skills Required: Valid Blasters Certificate of Competency (Coal) – issued by DGMS, Blasting operations & safety compliance knowledge – CMR 2017, Explosives Act, DGMS Circulars, Blast design and execution expertise – including burden, spacing, stemming, etc., Explosives inventory management & documentation – Daily reports, consumption registers, misfire logs
Responsibilities
- Plan and supervise all drilling and blasting activities in coordination with mine planning engineers.
- Design blast patterns considering strata conditions, bench height, burden, spacing, and desired fragmentation.
- Ensure correct charging and stemming of blast holes as per standard procedures.
- Monitor and control blast-induced effects like vibration, fly rock, and air overpressure.
- Ensure that explosives are stored in approved magazines and that daily usage is tracked properly.
- Maintain inventory records for explosives, detonators, and accessories.
- Enforce blasting time signals (Warning, Blasting, and All-Clear).
- Set up and monitor safety exclusion zones around blast sites.
- Ensure all personnel are at a safe distance or under cover before blasting.
- Use and ensure proper Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Personally investigate and supervise the handling of misfired shots.
- Mark and isolate the misfire area and follow misfire disposal procedures as per CMR and DGMS instructions.
- Maintain proper misfire records.
- Maintain and submit the following records:
- Daily Blasting Report
- Explosive Issue and Consumption Register
- Blast Performance Reports
- Misfire Logs
- Submit reports to Mines Manager, Safety Officer, and DGMS when required.
- Conduct toolbox talks and training for shotfirers, helpers, and drilling teams on blasting safety and procedures.
- Educate workers on dangers of improper explosive handling and the importance of following blast protocols.
- Ensure blasting operations comply with:
- Coal Mines Regulations, 2017 (Regulations 95–108)
- Explosives Act, 1884 & Rules, 2008
- DGMS Circulars and Notices
- Assist mine management in audits and inspections by statutory authorities.
- Assess post-blast results (fragmentation, throw, muck pile shape).
- Recommend adjustments to blast design for productivity and safety.
- Coordinate with geologists and engineers to modify blasting based on strata or seam conditions.
Who is an ideal candidate ?
An ideal candidate is a certified Blasting Officer (Coal) with hands-on experience in blast design, safety compliance, and explosives handling in coal mining operations. Proficiency with modern blasting tools and vibration monitoring systems is a strong advantage.
